How can we do this?
To put it simply: we buy in volume and our margins are low. We buy in 100,000 transaction increments that keeps our gateway expense very, very low. This usually allows us to usually beat your existing credit card rate and make a little profit (assuming you have a moderate credit card volume) even though we provide the gateway as a complimentary service. In short the credit card gateway is a “loss lead”. |

What is a gateway?
A Credit Card Gateway is a secure conduit to a credit card processor over the Internet. Because of the unique security challenges associated with the Internet, credit card gateway providers fill a need to allow you to get a credit card transaction from your web site or remote location to the bank. There are obvious expenses and fixed costs associated with this, which is why there are usually fees associated with this service. |

What are PCI requirements?
A simple explanation can be found at:
https://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/security_standards/pci_dss.shtml
In short, PCI requirements require credit card merchants take responsibility for how they handle credit card data. If merchants are careless and loose card holder data, particularly sensitive card data, it is very expensive for the card issuers and holders to deal with these issues, not to mention the losses associated with possible fraudulent credit card charges. So PCI sets minimum standards to insure the integrity of the credit card system. If merchants are negligent they can face large fines in the thousands of dollars. |

How can this help me with PCI requirements?
A side benefit of a credit card gateway is that it can help you with the pci requirements by offloading credit card processing and credit card storage. For example, you can actually input all the credit card transactions using web pages provided by the gateway provider, which means they are responsible for the credit card data they handle, not you. Also, one feature that has evolved from gateway providers is the ability to actually store credit card data off line such that you can reuse this data to process recurring transactions from subscriptions, payment plans, and frequent customers. This process is now generally referred to as “credit card tokenization”. The end result of “tokenizing” the credit card number is that merchants can often meet PCI level C (45 requirements) as opposed to level D (over 250 requirements which is not feasible for most merchants). If you want more help with PCI we can help.
